domestic waste in Galicia in recent years has been 1.2 kg\/day per person.<\/p>\n<p>Galicia currently recycles approximately 10% of the waste generated in the domestic sector, around 1.2 million tonnes per year. The amount of waste generated continues to grow, and recycling is far from the 60% target set in current legislation.<\/p>\n<p>In order to reduce waste it is important to separate it at source. In Galicia there are three models: Barbanza, Nosti\u00e1n (A Coru\u00f1a and the Mari\u00f1as consortium) and Sogama (rest of Galicia).<\/p>\n<p>Home and community composting is also a good option for prevention or reduction at source. 80% of organic waste can be composted, so a person who composts at home or in the community can reduce the waste generated by an average of 40%. In the Sogama model, home or community composting can increase the potential for selective collection and recycling to 75%.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The importance of reduction in origin<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source reduction and separation of generated waste are two necessary and essential measures to reduce the impact of waste and our consumption. Reduction is the priority measure, followed by separation and recycling of the waste generated.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What can we do?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is essential to make an informed decision when choosing which product to buy and to take responsibility for our ecological footprint. Some of the actions you can take are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buy wisely: make a list of what you need and stick to it. Don&#8217;t buy what you don&#8217;t need.<\/li>\n<li>Give preference to local and seasonal products: you will contribute to reduce the ecological impact of these products and to generate sustainable economic activity in your environment.<\/li>\n<li>Do not buy disposable products: prioritise the use of long-lasting, easily reusable and repairable products.<\/li>\n<li>Take your own bag to the supermarket: reducing the use of plastic is important, as it takes centuries to degrade.<\/li>\n<li>Buy products in bulk and avoid buying in packaging or excessive packaging: packaging is unnecessary and ends up becoming waste.<\/li>\n<li>Be careful when printing: avoid wasting paper and reuse it whenever possible.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t throw food away: regularly check the pantry and the grocery store, buy in moderation, pay attention to the expiry dates and adjust portions at mealtimes. You can prepare new menus with leftovers.<\/li>\n<li>Give a second life to the clothes you don&#8217;t use: there are many organisations that reuse and recycle clothes. Find out where you live and donate your clothes, many people need them!<\/li>\n<li>Use green and rechargeable batteries: a single battery can pollute 600,000 litres of water.<\/li>\n<li>Separate your waste: correctly dispose of your waste in the collectors at your place of residence.
