The chancellor of the University of A Coruña, Ricardo Cao, presides over the reception for the Erasmus Mundus SEAS 4.0 Master’s students at the Ferrol Industrial Campus

Ferrol, February 14th, 2024.- The rector of the University of A Coruña, Ricardo Cao; the vice-chancellor of the Ferrol Campus and Social Responsibility, Ana Ares; the director of the Industrial Campus, Marcos Míguez; the director of the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Ferrol (EPEF), Vicente Díaz Casas, and the project director of Navantia Seanergies, Fernando Lago, received this Wednesday, in the Concepción Arenal Assembly Hall of the Industrial Campus of Ferrol, the students of the third promotion of the Erasmus Mundus Master in Sustainability and Industry 4.0 Applied to the Maritime Sector (SEAS 4.0).

Throughout the week, the 19 students enrolled in the Erasmus Mundus SEAS 4.0 Master and coming from Pakistan, Nigeria, Azerbaijan, Sudan, Turkey, Cameroon, Colombia, Iran, Russia and Peru will visit the departmental city and its neighboring municipalities, the Museum of Naval Construction (Exponav) as well as the Navantia shipyards in Ferrol and Fene. It is planned that tomorrow, Thursday February 15, at 09:15 hours, they will be received by the mayor of the Council of Ferrol, José Manuel Rey Varela, in an institutional event at the Municipal Palace.

Classes in Naples, Ferrol, Zagreb and Hamburg

The Polytechnic School of Engineering of Ferrol (EPEF) hosts the Erasmus Mundus Master from the 2021/2022 academic year SEAS 4.0, an international degree that deepens the study and application of 4.0 technologies, energy efficiency and environmental improvement in the field of the naval sector, as well as in the construction and operation of the ship. The project, financed by the European Commission, was born under the umbrella of a consortium made up of the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), the University of A Coruña (Spain) and the University of Zagreb (Croatia). Later, the Technical University of Hamburg (Germany) would join the project.

The main coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus SEAS 4.0 Master’s is the professor of the Industrial Engineering Department of the University of Naples Federico II, Ermina Begovic. The person responsible at the University of A Coruña is the director of the Industrial Campus, professor at the Ferrol Polytechnic School of Engineering (EPEF) and member of the Integrated Engineering Group (Gii), Marcos Míguez. At the University of Zagreb, the coordination fell to professor Jerolim Andric, and at the Technical University of Hamburg to Franz von Bock und Polach.

The Erasmus Mundus SEAS 4.0 Master’s offers a mobility plan that takes the student to study the first semester in the city of Naples, the second in Ferrol and the third in Naples, Ferrol, Zagreb or Hamburg, according to their preferences. As far as the Final Master’s Thesis (TFM) is concerned, it can be done at any of the three universities that make up the consortium, at the associated universities or at the headquarters of the so-called industrial partners.

Upon completion, the student will receive two official degrees. The first will be issued by the University of Naples Federico II and the second by the University of A Coruña. In addition, they will also obtain an additional document in which the itinerary completed in the third semester will be collected.

Other universities and companies in the sector involved

The consortium made up of the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), the University of A Coruña (Spain), the University of Zagreb (Croatia) and the Technical University of Hamburg (Germany) is counting on the support of the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Antwerp, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Memorial University of Newfoundland, the University of Tasmania, the Touro College in Berlin and more from the supercomputing center CINECA.

In addition, the training program has the support of 28 companies and institutions in the sector, among which the Spanish companies Navantia, Ghenova Ingeniería, the Official College of Naval and Ocean Engineers, Naviera Armas, Astilleros C.N.P. Freire, MAN Spain or Oliver Design. At European level, other industrial partners such as Grimaldi, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds Register, DNV-GL or BMT Defense and Security stand out.
