Ferrol, April 29th, 2024. The students of the first year of the degree in International Relations, Sofía Castrillón Riol and Teresa Hermida Ricoy, are organising their first simulation on the workings of the United Nations (UN). The United Nations Model (MUN), which is the name of this learning experience, will take place on Friday 3 May, from 09:00 to 18:30, in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Humanities and Documentation, and will bring together more than 70 students of the degree in International Relations of the Industrial Campus of Ferrol, belonging to the University of A Coruña, and of the Ourense Campus of the University of Vigo.
In the Model United Nations (MUN), the participating students take the place of the ambassadors of the member countries of the United Nations to debate on some of the current issues included in the UN agenda. In this way, the student, under the figure of a delegate, prepares drafts of resolutions, argumentative strategies and conducts negotiations with allied and adversary countries, as well as resolving conflicts using the rules of the United Nations Procedure.
In the specific case of CouMUN, the name given to the simulation by the two students from the University of A Coruña, the students will participate in three UN Councils. The first of these, the Security Council, will analyse and debate the US invasion of Iraq. The second, the Human Rights Council, will review several reports on trafficking in women, and the third, the Economic and Social Council, will seek improvements for the refugees in Syria.
For the implementation of this simulation, the two students from the Ferrol Industrial Campus were supported by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Documentation, Manuela del Pilar Santos, and two coordinators of the degree in International Relations, the lecturer from the University of A Coruña, Félix Puime, and the lecturer from the University of Vigo, Laura Carballo.
