The third edition of the Hackathon Navantia Next Pioneers comes to an end at the Industrial Campus in Ferrol

Ferrol, 1st of March 2024. – The vice-rector of the Ferrol Campus and Social Responsibility, Ana Ares, and the director of Navantia Ferrol, Eduardo Dobarro, accompanied by the director of the Industrial Campus of the University of A Coruña, Marcos Míguez, the director of the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Ferrol (EPEF), Vicente Díaz Casás, and the director of R&D&I of Navantia Ferrol, Carlos Blanco, presented this Friday the award to the winning team of the III Hackathon Navantia Next Pioneers.

The event took place between 15:00 hours on Thursday 29th of February and 15:00 hours on Friday 1st of March at the Industrial Campus of Ferrol. A total of 55 students from the last years of the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development, which is taught at the University School of Industrial Design (EUDI), and the Degree in Mechanical Engineering, the Simultaneity Programme of the Degree in Mechanical Engineering and the Degree in Naval and Oceanic Engineering, the Master in Industrial Informatics and Robotics, the Master in Energy Efficiency and Sustainability, as well as the Erasmus Mundus Master in Sustainability and Industry 4. 0 applied to the Maritime Sector (SEAS 4.0); all of them studies linked to the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Ferrol (EPEF). It is worth noting the participation of 14 international students belonging to the last two degrees mentioned, from 11 different countries, such as Peru, Sudan, Nigeria, Cameroon, Azerbaijan and Turkey.

The challenge presented by Navantia for this hackathon was to find a collaborative system to assist workers in the assembly of small elements in blocks

or sublocks during the outfitting, slipway and topside phases of a ship’s construction. Throughout the event, the students were supported at all times by professionals from the naval and engineering sectors to find the solution to the proposed challenge, validating the ideas generated in real time, to which they added two motivational talks and other “energising” activities that kept the attention of the participating public during the 24 hours that the hackathon lasted.

A total of 10 solutions were presented, of which, after the corresponding presentation and analysis by a professional jury made up of people from Navantia, the University School of Industrial Design (EUDI) and the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Ferrol (EPEF), the MARLIN team made up of María Zubeldia Martínez, Bruno Brown Omlenyi, Arham Abdullah, Santiago Alonso García, Jorge Rodríguez and Iago Ferreira Carrera was awarded the prize. All the members of the winning team will receive a one-year training grant at Navantia.

The Navantia Next Pioneers hackathon shows, once again, the collaboration between Navantia and the existing collaboration between Navantia and the University of A Coruña, through the Industrial through the Industrial Campus of Ferrol, being a joint commitment to promote and give promote and give visibility to talent.
