Video games applied to education or health, protagonists of the new edition of Power UP Applied and Persuasive Video Games

A Coruña, Friday 10th May 2024. The Power Up Applied and Persuasive Videogames Conference, organised by the Industrial Campus of the University of A Coruña together with the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Ferrol (EPEF), through the Master’s Degree in Design, Development and Marketing of Video Games, in collaboration with the Xunta de Galicia and the City Council of Ferrol, today showed the multiple applications that open up with the use of video games.

As explained by the rector of the UDC, Ricardo Cao, today we are working in many fields of application “beyond the very concept of entertainment” of video games, which undoubtedly opens up new opportunities for creation, innovation, and also for study, research and technology transfer.

Thus we have the applied video games, which offer more than just entertainment and can be adapted to other sectors, such as education or health. And we also have those that try to make us reflect on something, the persuasive ones.

Thus, he gave the example of the participation of the UDC in the European Project Erasmus+. Incorporating interdisciplinarity in secondary education through conflict video games (InterGames)., an initiative that aims to improve secondary education curricula in Europe and to enhance the capacities of teachers and students with interdisciplinary approaches through conflict video films. A programme that seeks to encourage critical thinking, problem solving and emotional intelligence among secondary school students across Europe.

It is therefore a growing sector with a bright future. For this reason, in recent years the UDC has promoted specialised training such as the Master’s Degree, here at the Ferrol Industrial Campus, or the Degree in Digital Creation, Animation and Video Games, at the Elviña Campus.

In the afternoon, it was the time for the presentations of the students of the Master in Design, Development and Marketing of Video Games. So the Nameless team presented their What the Hell, a side scrolling game with elements of platforming, 2.5D action and head-scratching set in Dante’s infernos. And the Piña Colada team will present Platyfrog, a 3D adventure and platform game where members of two different river civilisations must work together to survive.
